Last summer, I met a guy on the trail who was using a steripen.  He got giardia, last I heard, he switched to a filter.

Well, I own a filter, but I've probably used it twice. Once, in a swamp in Maine, I was very grateful for it!

The takeaway for hikers is, leave your damn water filters at home, strengthen your immune system to what it should be through daily incremental exposure, and live a boatload more healthily....
