I read the first 5 or 6 books of his collected F&S articles, up to "Rubber Legs and White-Tail hairs". He has a bunch of memorable characters, many of whom I can't recall right now. The one standout is Rancid Crabtree, his mentor for all things relating to woods knowledge & how to navigate the world of adult life in a most curmudgeonly fashion. The stories evoke memories of "old-style" outdoor adventures or the type of outings available in parts of the country other than mine. (I'm mostly urban, East coast. McManus is Mid-West or perhaps Far West). To him the notion of ultralight packing, setting speed records, trail magic , etc is completely foreign. Still he's a fun read!
