The train derailment over the Potomac River in Harpers Ferry closed bridge access from the scenic town to the C&O canal trails in Maryland. It was the weekend right before Christmas last year when an empty freight train derailed. Investigators recently revealed operator error was the reason. Crews have been busy getting things back to where they were before the rail accident. And if you fix it, they will come! Over the weekend, those crews from the CSX railroad completed the repair work and the bridge reopened. And even though the National Park Service has not reopened its facilities in the town, tourists were happy at the start of this post-Independence Day summer week to take in the magnificent sights, the cliffs rising above the historic community from the cool waters and wave-splashed rocks. Message-ID: <05a701d65960$e7ddbed0$b7993c70$@tjfort.net> Does this list still work? Is there anyone still on it? Or has this community been replaced by a more high tech version / group? These are just general hiking questions. Not AT related per se. This group always did have opinions. :-) Life required that I lay off hiking for several years. I'm going to try and get back on the trail this fall. I'm looking at old gear seeing what will still work and what needs updating. Looks like my old PUR filter and whisperlite stove are still a thing with available parts. My boots are rotten and I should seriously consider a better pack. What brand/make boots do you use? Unfortunately I like large uppers for ankle support. Which limits my choices. I've just always liked the added support. Especially when I stumble. But, am considering normal boots. At least at first. What pack do you use? My old one was ok for what I used it for. It doesn?t seem to be the best choice anymore. I'm really concerned about lower back support for older hikers. I'm in decent shape. Just getting up there and want the comfort. t.
