[cdt-l] Big Sandy Lodge

Although others may not have had the best service at Big Sandy, my experience last year was extremely positive. People may not realize that these folks are driving your parcels into extreme BFE, the nearest post office being 50 miles of dirt roads away.

Our parcels didn't make it on time and the people were nice enough to let us raid the hiker box AND kick down a ton of Liption Instant soups which turned out to be the decisive caloric intake to make it to Togwotee.

While it is not designed to indulge every hiker's need it is a great place to stop for food and a hot shower in a very remote part of the country.

hi all,

a quick up date on a few springs in MT and ID

buffalo spring was awesome (a good cold break from the hot weather). the
flexible pipe from the spring to the trough was broken at a joint about 50
yards up the hill. which explains why no water has been coming out of the
pipe at the trough. i failed to pack my plumbing fittings and monkey wrench
so i was unable to fix it, but there was a nice shade tree right where the
pipe came apart and ice cold water was pouring out!

latham spring - thanks to Alden (northbounder) for identifying its location
on the trail. lots of sticks and arrows and orange blazes showing the
obscure jeep road to the spring.

i found a piped spring at keg spring road (the wolf guide book states "try
to find the pipe spring" and the Ley maps states there is a cistern at this
location. the timing was great. it was a long dry spell from odell creek
to blair lake. the spring was about 120 yards to the right of the trail
(southbound) at the location of the cistern (which apparently does not exist
anymore). look for four wooden posts forming a small square (old cattle
quard?) and head diagonally to the left downhill about another 30 yards.
you will hear the water and see the growth of shrubs, flowers, etc. the
pipe was buried in the shrubs. very good flow and very cold. it hit the
spot.

saw a strange animal just before entering yellowstone. still not sure what
it was?? are there such creatures as minature buffalo? i also need to talk
to someone about putting up a sign where i stealth camped south of Mack's
Inn. "Moose Crossing".

Anyhoo, life is good. And onto the Winds!

in dubois, wy right now and heading out tomorrow. great trail town.

The Big Sandy Lodge is a poor place to re-ration.
The people there were very rude and difficult to deal with.
Several hikers are of agreement on this issue.
If you can avoid frustration and anger by rationing elsewhere please do so.
Best regards,
Heath

While they may not be overtly hiker, they did cook the 6 of us breakfast,
which was pretty much an all you can eat, mid morning for a reasonable price.

However, I do think she was a little miffed when I sent two large boxes
(from Steamboat) instead of 6 individual boxes.

It's just one of those places where hikers aren't their top priority. Best
to be pleasant and well mannered for the sake of hikers that follow you.

I?ve heard mixed things about them, and had a mixed experience myself?
(assuming they?re still the same owners). Our box wasn?t there when we got
there, but admittedly, we really didn?t give the mail enough time. They live
a couple hours drive from the lodge, so they may not get the mail more than
a couple times a week. They did have a ?hiker box? though (but there wasn?t
much in it). They weren?t super friendly, but they did make dinner (which
wasn?t that great). When our box did arrive, they were kind & responsible
enough to forward it to Rawlins for us at no charge.

I think their big thing is ?hunters with deep pockets?, and they see hikers
as a lot of work & no $ return. It seems to me they could tap into the
climber/hiker clientele though - if they had a little caf? & advertised it.
There are a ton of hungry climbers coming out of the cirque of the towers
area & no other real options for that after-hike juicy burger.

-Jonathan
