Jeff Braun has provided update information on the situation at the Highland
Road south of Butte.

The western part of the road runs through private property west of the
national forest. The new owner of the property recently blocked the road,
claiming that there was no public right-of-way.

Fortunately, the Silver Bow County commissioners promptly acted to designate
the route formally as a county road. County officials then removed the gates
that had been blocking access. When a ranch employee attempted to turn
people away from using the road, he was arrested and charged with disorderly
conduct.

For the time being, the road is open (though keep off the land on both
sides). The landowner may continue to litigate his position, so we will need
to follow developments.

Thanks, Jeff, for the heads up.

[Also, the Purdy Fire is still burning between Sheridan Pass and Leeds Creek
and the closure remains in effect. Looking at the maps, it seems that
Cottonwood Creek-Bacon Creek-Green River, on the west side of the Divide,
might be a workable alternate route.]
