A couple people in the group that I hiked nearly half the trail  with had 
Pocketmails and used them the same way.  They even used them when  we got split 
up in the same town!  
 
You can also subscribe to the cdt-l with your Pocketmail addy (or at-l and  
pct-l but it may be desirable to disable incoming mail on the subscription  
page) and relay water/trail conditions, updates, etc., to the list which some of  
the hikers have done the past few years.
