As a footnote, the generic text file approach would 
obviously limit the map data to a series of waypoints, so 
multiple files would probably be needed to portray the full 
roster of CDT route options.

Another approach could be parallel files, eg. tpo and txt, 
based on the same data.

I agree it could get messy trying to create a functional and 
adaptable map set for the entire trail, without relegating 
the thing to the realm of hacks and tinkerers.

But hey, it was worth the daydream! :)
