That information isn't lost on the black and white maps.  The green  
forested areas print as grey on the black and white maps.  It is more  
difficult to see than the color version, but it is possible.  The PCT  
guidebook maps are like that.

It isn't possible to tell the difference between Jonathan's alternate  
routes and the primary route in the black and white version.  The  
11x17 version is much nicer to read though than the 8.5x11 version  
(in B&W or color).
