The latest information from Glacier National Park is that the Red Eagle
section is likely to be closed until mid-August 2007.

Accordingly, SOBO (and flip-flop) hikers may need to make alternate
arrangements. NOBO hikers should be ok, though the route will be passing
through severely burned terrain.

One possible route that merits careful study would be to leave the CDT
at Reynolds Creek and proceed via Sperry Chalet, Snyder Creek, Lincoln
Lake Trail, Lincoln Creek Trail, South Boundary Trail to Walton, [ or
Fielding Coal Creek Trail, US 2 near Fielding Guard Station if South
Boundary Trail doesn’t connect to Walton]. Then up Middle Flathead to
Schafer GS and Trail 173 to Pentagon GS (or detour on Tr. 241 via
Trilobite Lakes and Dean Lake to Switchback Pass).

We intend to review this with GNP personnel and comment further in the
next newsletter (late February or March).
