The Bureau of Land Management and project partners: New Mexico State
Land Office, Department of Game and Fish, State Forestry Division;
Foundations (Mule Deer and Rocky Mountain Elk), National Wild Turkey
Federation, Quail Unlimited, F-D Cattle Co. and Farr Cattle Company,
will conduct a 38,000-acre prescribed burn on Pelona Mountain.
Approximately 10 miles of Continental Divide Trail will be affected on
Pelona Mountain. The burn is expected to last between 6-10 days. The
project is part of a statewide ecosystem restoration and habitat
enhancement initiative called Restore New Mexico. Prescribed fire will
be used in this project as the tool to improve and restore large-scale
landscapes.
