Scored a 34% on Fiddlehead's questionaire- maybe it would have been higher if I ever chose to hike and camp in snow, which of course I'm not planning to start any time soon. Not sure why anyone would get upset over a quiz like this since it seems to be all in good fun.

my wife mary and I are trail angels in deming, NM for people that take the
columbus route - I would like to get a network going of other trail angels
north of us and/or of other angels all the way to the canadian border so we may
communicate and share info - and to let the angels to the north of us as in
silver city and quemado know there are people heading their way

I forgot a couple of things from my last posting (I'm old and that's my
excuse) first off - please change the phone number that I believe is on
jonathan's map for the angels in deming - you have 505 546 7437 - my wife works nights
and sometimes we disconnect the phone when she sleeps during the day - the
new number is my cell which is always with me 575 494 4357 - secondly - NM
changed it's area code - it's not 505 for the entire state anymore - it is now
575 in the south and some other parts - so if 505 doesn't work try 575

Hello, my first post under my new login (forgot my password for the old one)
I hiked the CDT many years ago.
I have made up a quiz which is basically my thoughts on what is important (or not) in learning or honing hiking skills.
I put it out on the AT forum and got flamed pretty hard by some of the newbie's there.
I would like to put it on this forum and see if there is any difference in the attitudes towards it, scores (if you care to post your results), and any comments.
Feel free to say what you think. I'm a big boy and can take it.
Here is the link to my blog and the quiz: http://fiddlehead.wordpress.com/2009/03/30/rate-your-hiking-ability/
thanks everyone, fiddlehead

By definition, newbie's don't have enough on-trail experience to make informed judgments about the actions experienced hikers. I sometimes feel that all the media hype surrounding a select few individuals, the race for records, or just the name recognition that naturally develops as one becomes a more experienced member of the trail community has made them overly-sensitive. Book knowledge is a wonderful thing to have, but in my limited experience, the Trail Gods always seem to have a few surprises that aren't covered in the books.
Interesting survey. Scored 35% - much higher than I thought I'd do. It will be interesting to see the analyses of the results.
Hike on,
Wandering Bob
