I found just the opposite to be true in the boot heel section of NM. The the BP were friendly, helpful and never asked for an ID from this aging gringo. They assessed and checked me out in a very non-confrontational way. More detail in http://www.trailjournals.com/entry.cfm?id=233492 Eric White

I don't know if this is necessary or not but will send it out any ways - last spring a Border Patrol agent on the Columbus route had a thru hiker empty out his entire pack making sure that he wasn't transporting anything illegal - a word to the wise
