Here's a link that shows the elevation profiles for the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail.

A very interesting comparison of the relative length and altitude of the trails and of course their profile. I'm not sure it captures how steep the Appalachian Trail can be, however!
