[Cdt-l] Chama (Cumbres) Entry Day?

Should be a great hike david and the snow should be nicely melted!
 
brian and martina have now hiked from Silverthorne to Twin Lakes SB and are aiming for hiking the San Juans to Wolf Creek Pass. We met snow above about 11,000ft. The snow was very soft and made for some deep postholing in places. Over Searle Pass to kokomo (?) pass was snowy, tiring and wet on the feet. Probably about 6 miles of deep snow. The views were great though. The pass in the Holy Cross Wilderness was shorter, probably 3 miles of deep snow. Other than that its been plain sailing with well marked trail with signposts and all the luxuries of the Colorado Trail.
 
Next stop Monarch pass and salida !

I guess its a case of "armchair" versus "on the ground" decisions. 
I am looking forward to Section hiking for 35 days northbound from Cumbres Pass starting 22 July. 
Good luck for you remaining hike. I like your idea of flipping to Copper Mtn and hiking south so you get to see the South San Juans. Many seem to just skip this section and go via Creede.

We weighed up both options and the 'closed for logging' CDT seemed better. As it turned out the CDT through the logging area was very short and easy. Certainly compared with blowdowns later on it was 'a walk in the park' !

Perhaps we need the equivalent of a "Ray Day" for sensible entry to  
the snowy South San Juans?
Perhaps at least June 20?
Also why are hikers not using the well documented Wolf alternative  
that avoids the logging?
Perhaps heavy snow in the valley is the answer, but why negotiate the  
blow downs (several times) if you don't have to?.
