Generally speaking, the high country really does not open up until June 20th or so.   Some areas, such as the San Juans, are closer to July in terms of high country access.

If you go SoBo from Grand Lake, you'll hit the Indian Peaks closely followed by the James Peak area with its 13k foot peaks. I have friends who gave gone  late season *skiing*
in early June in that area! 


Not that you CAN'T go earlier, it just may not be much fun. :)
