Here is some recent news relevant to the CDT.

Forest Jobs and Recreation Act

A wilderness related bill sponsored by Montana’s senator Jon Tester (D) would designate 550,000 acres of new wilderness throughout western Montana. If the bill is made into law the Continental Divide Trail would pass through seven new wilderness areas, one new national recreation area and two expanded wilderness areas:

Mt. Jefferson wilderness (new)
Centennial Mountains wilderness (new)
Lima Peaks wilderness (new)
Italian Peaks wilderness (new)
West Big Hole (south and north units) wilderness (new)
West Big Hole National Recreation Area (new)
Anaconda Pintler wilderness (expanded)
Electric Peak wilderness (new)
Bob Marshal wilderness (expanded)

Federally designated wilderness in Montana has not been expanded since 1984. Many Montanans, including myself, feel public lands in Montana deserve more wilderness protection. However Tester’s bill is not without controversy because it would also require a mandatory quote of logging on Montana’s national forest.
