[Cdt-l] Wolf Creek Pass-Nearest Parking Allowed?

Hello all!

Thanks very much for all of the hlep with my trip planning.

I have changed my plans a bit and have decided to go to the Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juans.

I was looking at hiking north from Wolf Creek Pass.....

Where are the best places to access the CDT (and leave my truck)???

Where can I park? Would Wolf Creek Ski Area allow backpacker parking? Is it far away from the trail?

And how about on the North end of the Weminuche? And are there good trailheads to access the CDT at??

Also, are permits required there??

Thanks everyone!

Mike,

Thanks hugely for the ALDHA summer newsletter. I'm delighted to get it as
an online pdf download.

I joined the ALDHA list some years ago but never got any email at all
although my list "options" seemed appropriate. Maybe you could comment.

Thanks again,
Walt

J. Ley MT68 Note #4
Hey, just a bit south west of #4 where trail 004 meets trail 039 there has clearly been major work done to both the trailhead and trail 039 "Alduous-Hancock lakes trail. There are two campsites with fire rings, grills, picnic benches and steel bear proof food storage lockers. The trailhead has a brand new sign that mentions the CDT and a trail register. That little stretch of road only visible for one square on the topo is actually a decent trailhead road as I met some dayhikers and they had driven a compact car up it to get there.
Trail 039 from this trailhead northbound is very well maintained and clearly Alduous lake at 1.3 miles distant is a major dayhike/picnic destination.
Anyhow, just and FYI for folks in case you need a "bail out" option due to injury or illness, I think this trail head, being that it's so well travelled, would work.
The Delorme atlas kinda shows it, perhaps that dirt road along Ching creek. Anyhow, folks with support might be able to use this road/trail head.

Well as my SoBo buddies have already told me the payphone at Monida is out of order. This means bugging the poor fella that lives in the caboose to call the Mt View Motel in Lima for a ride.
The irony is that everyone with a cell phone had no signal here.. Except me... But the Peek has no voice capability and if the Motels # is just a landline they cannot get a text message!
Well at least I have found out one place in the world where there is a perfect T-Mobile signal!
I suppose I will send a text anyways, ya never know. I'll be in Monida by 3PM.

I just wanted to let folks know that according to the Mountain View Motel staff and my own experience, the hitch on HWY 15 can be pretty easy.
The phone is still broke in Monida and it is quite a ways distant, like 2 miles, from where the CDT meets HWY15.
When I got to point #4 on J. Ley MT66 I simply jumped the fence and crossed the HWY.. The very first vehicle (A dodge flatbed towing a Dodge racecar!) stopped and brought me to Lima.
It was crazy.. I spent 30 seconds standing there and Wham.. Got a ride.
May you have the same Luck.. I am sending you "Mojo".
If you do have trouble getting a ride and want to call from Monida the gentleman that lives in the Caboose is named Earl. He has a phone. According to the postmaster he has been sick for a while so be super nice to this dear person and he might let you call the Mtn View Motel for a ride.
By the way, this motel has a gigantic hiker box(you could get three days of food easy out of this thing!) and a trail register. They also have a laundry room open from noon to 9PM.
There is also a trail register at the PO.
Lima really lives up to it's reputation as a hiker friendly town!
Cheers Y'all- Iceaxe
P.S. Thankyou CDTA trail crew at Rock Springs! Your hard word is VERY appreciated.. Thanks for the pancakes too! You are all awesome folks!
