Gaia GPS is *the* GPS app for iPhone. MyTopo and satellite map coverage for the entire US, cache-able from the cloud as needed. Transferring GPX tracks and points by email is a breeze. The iPhone 4's GPS works at least as well as my old Garmin eTrex, and probably better. Battery life is a big concern with GPS apps, though, so you'll either need to use it very sparingly between town chargings, or carry one of these:
