Maildrops just got cheaper! On January 2, the USPS started offering new
Priority Mail Regional Boxes:
Box A = 360 cubic inches, 15 pound limit
Box B = 707 cubic inches, 20 pound limit

The cost varies depending upon the distance traveled. I just did a test on
three distances:

Miami FL to Stehekin WA: Box A 15 pounds $9.37, Box B 20 pounds $14.62

Kansas City to Stehekin WA: Box A 15 pounds $7.83, Box B 20 pounds $12.29

Kansas City to Denver CO: Box A 15 pounds $5.58, Box B 20 pounds $8.06

This is cheap compared to:

Large Priority Flat Rate Boxes, 792 cubic inches, no weight limit, $14.95
when mailed in person, $14.20 when using online click-n-ship.

Medium Priority Flat Rate Boxes, 513 or 546 cubic inches, no weight limit,
$10.95 when mailed in person, $10.5 when using online click-n-ship.

However, these new Regional Boxes are *only* available for commercial and
online customers. Anyone can sign up for USPS online click-n-ship. So, it
won't do hikers any good when they're at the PO in person. It will help
tremendously when shipping boxes from home. You have to order the boxes
from the USPS (www.usps.com).
