[Cdt-l] Cdt-l Digest, Vol 44, Issue 9 - Miller Fire and More

Hello -

Fortuitously hitched back to Deming yesterday pm from the Emory Pass area for
resupply and a quick doctor's visit for an aggravating infected blister. A substantial
round of thanks to all who have monitored and reported on this fire. Otherwise I (and
the other hikers out there) could have walked right into a toasty death trap. A special
round of gratitude to Keith of the big heart who makes the start from Las Palomas
a lot easier than it otherwise would be. Please pay close attention to his cautions on
high winds, which will coat everything you have in dust and grit, including your teeth and
your toothbrush.

The CDT so far is a whole nother complete education, I tell ya. My route so far (close to but not
waypoint for waypoint according to one of my idols, Mr. J. Ley) was pretty rugged, solitudinous,
drrrrrrrry, with comparatively few wildlife sightings (javelina, wild turkeys, coupla deer, but
only coyote and bear scat. Saw but one rattler (and he was a 4.5 ft reddish/greenish beaut!) - I
almost stepped on him, coiled and sleeping and smiling, before he became aware of me. Then
all heck broke loose as I tried to get around him. His smile disappeared and he came after me - fast
and persistent. I was able to gently (as I could) flip him on his back 4-5 times with my hiking poles
before he became discouraged and slithered off, rattling his irritation. He had truly wanted to bite me.

Ranchers and other people I have met in NM have been been polite and wonderful and helpful.
Including the two Border Patrol agents I encountered. One tracked me for two days before
finding me, the other other kinda popped outa the bushes near a stock tank, wearing his
business face and his right hand very near his sidearm. He said after a short talk establishing
my bona fides "You're not what I was expecting." Got that right!

Too long a message, but I am pumped. Depending on the fire conditions, I will hitch back
north and continue my meanderings - with the speed of molasses. But I am looking forward
to resuming the trail... as long as I don't havta drink (and gratefully, too!) any more of even that
tar-black skunky water you look for constantly along stretches of the trail.

Regards to all,
Rich "Bear" Brown

At some point, a number of days back, this human caused fire might have seemed like an opportunity to do a little clean up, absent building firelines deep in the wilderness. Right now, probably not so much.
