I agree with Lynne and the Hog.. Particularly at intersections that are
ambiguous or where the Lay maps might be slightly off.
I personally would like to get away from all the technology that is
overwhelming the CDT these years and try to "do more with less" but I am afraid
of being misplaced, alone and out of food or water. I think I am pretty good
with a topo map and a compass. The thought of bringing technology into my
hike is displeasing.
A couple of well placed markers would be awesome. Even a arrow made out of
sticks or something drawn into the sand might be sufficient.

I recall that someone made an arrow out of sticks pointing to Latham
Spring a few years ago. I owe them a debt of gratitude as I never would
have found it otherwise (the spring itself is just over a small rise and
out of sight from the trail). It's little things like this that make a
big difference in a hiker's day.

In 03' we did an alternate route out of Yellowstone through the Lee-Metcaf
area. Basically using forest service maps our town stops were Ennis,
Whitehall and then rejoining Jonathan's route at McDonald Pass. Has anyone
considered or done something similar. I will be hiking northbound starting April
29 from Crazy Cook.

I would like to ease into the hike by caching some water for the first 3
or 4 days. What would be the best locations to do so? I plan on doing 20 to
25 miles per day. I will be starting at Crazy Cook on April 21st.

Talk to Sam Hughes. Last year he maintained three caches in bear boxes that
were well spaced for the first few days. If he knows when you are hiking,
he
will make sure they are stocked. That?s what he did for the four of us that
he took to CC.
