True hiker trash stays in motels where there are often no locks.  I keep ID and $ on me. Not much in pack that anyone would find of value.  dirty socks, gorp and maps etc.

Hiker trash may want to consider avoiding motels without old-fashioned key locks. What could be worse than returning to find your backpack stolen in the middle of a thru-hike. Link to article below...
