[Cdt-l] Early Starters

Because I was more concerned about not being able to finish my CDT thru near the northern border due to early season powder snow storms after 9/15, I started my trip on 3/1/80, hit Colorado's "wall of snow" on 4/1, and plowed on over the consolidated snowpack.

Just be skilled at walking over snow and an "early start" is not bad. (Then, of course, teaching wilderness skills is what we do, here, at Mountain Education!)

For those wanting to begin their NOBO hike early this is what Carole in Grants has to say: I don't know about the hikers starting as early as 3/31, because Mt. Taylor has more snow than it has had in over 15 years. FYI: We have a trip planned for the last part of April. For those of you who plan to be here then you can still send resupply boxes to our house. I will have our house/animal sitter put them on the front porch. We have a grassy area to camp and outside water that can be accessed and a fire ring. Sorry for any inconvenience...it's our grandson's birthday!!

  Warmly,
  Will and Lynnae McConaha
