We are meeting some NOBO hikers for the winds first week of August and want to hike the length of them from Big Sandy Lodge to Green River Lake campground.  Hoping to hitch hike back around to our car at Big Sandy.  If anyone has any input on this please post.  Thanks, karen

How are the mosquitoes in the Winds right now? I'm going to be there
in about 2 weeks. Do you think they'll be on the wane or just warming
up? I fully intend to be well-prepared, but I guess I am still shell-
shocked by the Oregon mosquito experience I had in July 2009 on the
PCT and wonder if I'm going to experience that kind of hell again. I
might actually make some new gear for myself in order to survive if
it's going to be like that again.

I don't have a first hand account, but based on general experience of
mosquitoes in mountains throughout the west... they seem to peak a few
weeks after the bulk of the snow melts, then gradually lessen until
disappearing in dry and frosty weather come mid-septemberish. Of course,
the intensity will vary with how wet the winter/spring was, and the
local terrain (i.e. the high lakes in Oregon are a breeding ground). The
schedule/intensity will vary with the elevation too. If I had a crystal
ball, I'd guess they're pretty bad in parts of the Winds right now, and
will be slightly less bad in 2 weeks... but still an annoyance. Of
course, if anyone has a first-hand account, that'd be better...

I hiked through the Winds July 12-19, 2008 and did encounter what I would
call a moderate number of mosquitoes. I doubt that it was anywhere near
the biblical plague you experienced on the PCT. I was carrying full body
netting (worn only in the worst spots) which weighs next to nothing, and
DEET. Both helped me enjoy the trek, but a rereading of my journal
reminded me that there were some areas (especially south of Pole Creek)
where the mosquitoes were annoying. I awoke at least one morning with a
cloud of the winged devils waiting outside the tent.

Given the timing of your hike, you might expect fewer mosquitoes. With an
effective repellant you should be fine (net pants and net shirt
optional).

Thank you all for your mosquito warnings. Sounds like I'll be
somewhere in the thick of it. In Oregon they did not sleep at night
and they didn't wane much in the day and there really was no
difference between being near a lake or being in an area with no
visible water for miles. They were able to bite through all of my
clothing, including shoes. I will bring my Oregon stuff then and
maybe make some new stuff I had been dreaming of during the onsloaught.
