Having used both alcohol and canister stoves, I feel that there is no doubt
the alcohol ones are riskier.  Some sort of fireproof ground cloth is in
order, but most hikers are so obsessed with weight they won't go there.

You know, I'm remembering all the hiker-started forest fires over the last 6
years along the PCT, and I wonder how many hikers caused before the advent
of alcohol stoves? Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall any back when we
had white gas stoves (even canister stoves, really)...

Also a great reminder to operate your stove on a clear surface, such as a
flat rock or swept dirt, and hopefully in an open area of some sort. I'm
only guessing, but this camper's stove probably got knocked over, spilling
burning alcohol on a pile of handy plant debris.
