thank you so would I
why involve the BLM? why not just change it in the hiking community? no one local knows anything about CC nor does the BP that travel past it daily - I think it's more known as mangas gate

Ms. M,
So you have the stroke to name a trailhead after Jim Wolf for a $20 donation but we have to beg the BLM to honor Sam Hughes?
This whole thing is starting to play like one of those spam filled public broadcasting campaigns. I’d toss some bucks your (CDTC) way if I thought it would go better than the CDTA mess went, but it looks to me like this new group is the same people under a different name. Please educate me.
What are you raising the money for? Is it to rent an office, pay yourself? What?? (How exactly is my money going to be spent?)
I’m all ears.
PS: I’d rename Crazy Cook after Sam in a heartbeat.

Hey folks,

CDTC has been speaking with Sam's family about many things to help honor Sam, but all of them require involvement of the BLM who actually mange the lands the Trail resides on. Please be patient and as we work with Sam's family, the BLM, and the Trail Community, we will find a wonderful way to recognize Sam, and not create any incidents with unintended consequences. Crazy Cook got its name by the piece of concrete that has been at the intersection of the access road and the border for quite some time. Based on how long its been there, it's now somewhat historical.

I am all for recognizing Sam at Crazy Crook, but we shouldn't rush into a name change. I'm sure some of the CDT gurus can give us a more accurate history of why it is called Crazy Cook. I don't want the Native Americans, the BP, the illegals, the BLM, the Federales or the Mennonites across the fence - to get upset with the CDT. Mini Mart

sam hughes funeral is july 13th at 10 a.m. at the hachita community center - they may take his ashes to the cemetary afterwards

I am going to the funeral from deming - if any hikers want to attend and plan on flying into el paso and then bus to deming - I may be able to get the hikers rate at the american inn - I will be driving down in the morning and can take about 4 people in the cab and maybe 4 more in the pickup bed - I will not charge anything since I'm going anyways

let me know if anyone is interested

on another note I'm thinking that changing the terminus name from crazy cook to sam hughes memorial trailhead would be appropriate - thoughts on this??? I don't know how many of you know why it's called crazy cook but it's ancient history from the early 1900's

About Risk – Jeep Gaskin
“49, 3 kids, all of whom climb. in fact we're going sunday. I'm going to die and so are you. so are my kids. in the perfect world I'll die before they do, but there aren't any guarantees. so I prepare them for life the best way I know how, doing the things that prepared me to massage my mother’s feet and tell her not to be scared, that it was her time to go. and that made it possible to kiss my dad one last time and tell him I loved him, and walk away. if you have depth to your soul and insights into life's lessons and you didn't get them from risk then congratulations but I can't relate. climbing can be deltoids or it can be zen; it can be runout or short safe falls; it can be skies filled with lightning or crisp air ahead of mare's tails. It is never standing in a grocery line.”
