If you haven't commented on the Blackfoot Travel Plan, please review the
following from Montana Wilderness Association and send in your comments.
"The Helena National Forest has issued a draft summer/fall travel plan
that will determine the future of the Continental Divide in the
headwaters of the legendary Big Blackfoot River, and we need your voice now!
The 45-day public comment period on the Draft Environmental Impact
Statement for the Blackfoot Travel Plan closes on Monday March 11, 2013.
In addition, a 90-day public comment period on the proposed forest plan
amendment for big game habitat security will end on April 25, 2013.
The Blackfoot Travel Plan compares three alternatives, and MWA supports
Alternative #3, with the following modifications:
1. Retaining forest plan elk security standards
2. No allowance for vehicles to drive off legal routes to camp
MWA supports Alternative #3 because:
* It restores crystal clear waters brimming with trout by reclaiming
destructive, unneeded roads and illegal motor trails.
* It provides homeland security for wildlife including mountain goats
on Stonewall Mountain, grizzlies and wolverine in Nevada Mountain
and elk herds that migrate across the Divide.
* It offers by far the best quiet mountain trails for horseback users,
mountain bikers, hunters, runners and hikers.
* It fulfills the quiet recreation and conservation purposes of the
Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, designating the CDT quiet
and motor free; protecting natural, cultural and historic values of
its wild lands corridor.
Send a message, urging Forest Supervisor Kevin Riordan to adopt
Alternative #3, which best restores and protects the legendary trout
waters, quiet trails and wild headwaters of the Big Blackfoot River.
Letters should clearly state your issues and personal concerns with the
alternatives, the adequacy of the environmental review, or both. *The
deadline for comments is Monday, March 11, 2013.*
