[Cdt-l] Mileage from Lake City to Salida

It is 101 miles. My wife and I did that section a couple of years ago. If
you want to do a 14er, San Luis Peak is literally right next to the CDT at
San Luis Pass. It is an easy (Class 1) walk up, 1500 ft over 1.5 miles. I
highly recommend it. The views are awesome. If you would rather not come
down the same way, you can go down the other side and follow the Fisher Cr
Trail. You will be paralleling the CDT on the other side of the creek until
they join up several miles down. It is probably a little shorter, maybe a
mile, and definately if you don't come back the 1.5 miles to the CDT.
That's what we did. We even had the extra bonus of seeing a bull moose
standing in a beaver pond.

Greys Peak is right on the trail just south of I-70. Torres is a
short detour (less than a mile) from Greys and a class 2 (some having to
put your hands on the ground). You can also drop down the other side (class
2) to the Grizzley Gulch trail, which will connect up with the CDT.
It would be close to the same mileage and maybe a little shorter.

Mount Elbert and Mt Massive, between Salida and Leadville, are the highest
and the most acreage above 14,000 ft. in CO, respectively. Both are a few
miles off the trail and have routes where you can go up one way and come
down another, class 1 up and down and class 2 up and 1 down, respectively.
Each would add a couple of miles.
