[Cdt-l] Direction of Thru-Hike

My husband and I are older slower hikers who wanted to enjoy a relatively leisurely hike on the CDT. In 2006 we started April 17th and reached the CO border June 2. It was a very low snow year in NM and southern Colorado, but we still ran into snow in northern NM and in the south San Juans. We had to do a couple of detours - around the Knife Edge and from Blue Lake to Elwood Pass - because we were postholing hip deep.

We've hiked the CDT both NOBO and SOBO. Both directions have advantages and disadvantages. (see http://spiriteaglehome.com/cdt_northsouth.html In 2006, the number of NOBO vs. SOBO hikers was about even. Some years there are a lot more in one direction or the other, and some years have a lot of flip floppers or people who take off for a month or so in the middle to wait for snow to melt.

Both our hikes took six months. My 2006 NOBO journal, if you're interested - is at http://spiriteaglehome.com/cdt06.html The 1999 SOBO journal is also there for comparison.

Subject: [Cdt-l] Direction of Thru-Hike

I am starting to plan my Thru-Hike for 2015 and am thinking of going NOBO starting on April 1. I hear of quite a few going SOBO – any advice?

Thanks
