[Cdt-l] Where would 1,500 miles be? - hitchhiking

I agree on the hitchhiking odds. On the AT the majority of my rides were with tradesmen in pickups - painters, plumbers, carpenters, etc. I hitched fewer times on the PCT, but this held true there as well. I hitched 5 times in Maine, and the first vehicle to come by picked me up 4 of those times.

Although the "rule" has exceptions. Two of us were picked up in NY by a guy in a Mercedes convertible.

Yeah, that's true about the shuttles, but they can be expensive. I've found Colorado to be the hardest state for hitchhiking. Shiny happy people in shiny happy cars do not pick up backpackers.

On the other hand, people in Wyoming and New Mexico are not as well off (financially). It has been my experience that people who have needed help in their lives are more likely to help others. That's why the person in the old beat-up car will give you a ride. New Mexico is the easiest state for hitchhiking.

Virtually all of the ski/resort towns in Colorado have shuttle services to the Denver airport, so you won't have much trouble if you are close to one of these towns. New Mexico and Wyoming are different stories.
