And it should be more "embraceable" with a partner.

You will know by the time you reach Mimbres or Silver City, whether to take the Gila or Black range (if northbound).
Its good to think about this stuff now but just like the 'fear' induced on the PCT about the snowpack each year.. you get over it.
It is effortless to simply take a different route when the time comes.
Isn't this the essence of being flexible on your hike?
You can always find another way and in my experience the worry over such things is greater than the actual danger they represent.
