[Cdt-l] Cdt-l Digest, Vol 78, Issue 7

That's sad to hear.  Bill was one of my heroes.  I heard him speak at our church a couple of years after his thru-hike, bought his book (autographed, of course), and reread it every few years.  His hike is a great story, but the book is really more about his faith journey than his hiking journey.

I remember my first or second day on the AT, trying to figure out where to place my boots on a small but tricky stream crossing.  I stopped and asked myself out loud "How the hell did Bill Irwin do this?"  When I got tired and thought about quitting, I would tell myself that if Bill and Grandma Gatewood could  finish, then so could I.

BTW, I consider myself lucky to have met and shared stories with both Bill Irwin and Zero/Zero, the only two (that I know of) successful blind AT thru hikers.

Bill Irwin died from cancer on March 1st at his home in Sebec, Maine.
As a blind hiker, he showed uncommon perseverance to complete the AT
in 1990 with his dog Orient.  Here is the story printed in the Bangor
Daily News.  What can we learn from his life experiences?
