[Cdt-l] Robert Garrow

What a terrible person Garrow was. I just read some bio on him. I got my
Introduction to backpacking in the Adirondacks in 1968 or 1969 and a few
more trips there in the early 70s. I hiked a section of NM CDT with a man
who carried a .32 with him. I was glad he had it. I have a .38 in the
house but usually don't pack it when backpacking. Maybe sometimes on day
trips. There is a place for guns in this world.

Willy, you were close to this story. Terrible.

Did you mean Robert Garrow? Garrow killed my high school friend and
girlfriend on the AT in 1972.

I recently met an avid proponent of gun control while hiking a section of
the cdt. That is easy to be if you are an unattractive guy with no outward
signs of wealth. As a female solo hiker who grew up in the Adirondack
mountains during David Garro's reign of terror, I can promise you that bears
are not the reason I carry a gun.

I also frequently get asked if I carry a gun and my answer is always "of
course ". I know that the people asking are only concerned for my safety.

Not necessarily so. If you shoot a bear with the RIGHT gun in the RIGHT
place, it'll be dead. And you'll probably spend at least a week trying to
explain the "authorities" why you shot it. A week is a lot of hiking time
to be spending on paperwork.
RIGHT gun - is one that's heavier than you want to carry.
The RIGHT place - isn't visible if you're being charged by the bear.
OTOH - it IS legal to carry the gun, just not advisable. Or smart.
Also - the question (Are you carrying a gun?) has probably been asked of
every thruhiker in history. Multiple times. Deal with it.

If you shoot a bear with a gun it's going to get really pissed off.

But especially since now I will get asked yet again by all my concerned
friends and co-workers if I plan to carry a gun when I hike thru this
section of the CDT (sigh)....

Montana bear handgun joke:

Q: What's the perfect handgun to shoot a bear with?
A: One that's greased up and sights removed. That way after you shoot
the bear, when the bear takes the gun away from you and shoves it up
your a**, it doesn't hurt so much.
