I'm not sure if this is how to join in on this thread, but I've got to say
-- hey guys, have you lightened up your gear? My husband and I, in our 39th
year of backpacking together, turn 67 shortly. In 2013 we hiked the PCT,
but the gear we used to do it was vastly different from what we used in the
past and it maked a huge difference. Much lighter tent, packs, stove,
raingear, shoes (trail runners)...everything. We left all the old faithful,
heavy gear at home in the closet. We also left home the extra t-shirts and
all the other stuff we didn't really need but had always carried. We
weathered some really foul weather with our lighter gear. It does cost to
replace your gear, but our old Dana Design packs cost us $450 back in the
early 90s and our Gossamer Gear and ULA packs were each around $225. Our
new Big Agnes tent was about $300 at 20% off from REI, but remember buying
Northface tents back in the 80s?

And while we never wanted to be on FaceBook, we had my sister put our dog
on it so that we could get a few pictures and notes out to some friends.
Now we use it exclusively to keep in touch with all our great trail buddies
who became such good friends in 5 months on the PCT (mostly 20 and 30
somethings). Many of them will be on the CDT this year. We were hoping to
see them and join them for sections, but we've decided to do the AT this
year. Got to do it before we really ARE too old.

So if you haven't lightened up your gear and you really want to stay out on
the trail, take a look at some of the great resources and great gear out
there to help you do it.

Happy trails
