Just an FYI, SMD donates a portion of their proceeds to a trail of your choice. I just placed an order with them so it is too early to comment on the gear.

Roger,

Trail Dog and I like the Mariposa.

It's light weight and holds up well for longer carries like through the Bob Marshall.

Roger,

I used the Gossamer Gear Gorilla on the CDT this last hiking season and was very happy. I pondered on the Kumo, but for me it would not have been comfortable as it does not have an internal frame or built-in hip belt. For my cold weather gear, the Gorilla was again fantastic, although I must admit, I believe the Mariposa would have been more sufficient. I was on the light side of gear with a base weight of 7.5 lbs and my cold weather gear around 9.5 lbs give or take a few.

I hope this helps.

I went thru 2.5 Mariposas ( 2007 to 2011 versions ) while completing the CDT. A great pack that requires some TLC and avoidance of overloading. Mini Mart
