Michelle, you said it was an 8 hour drive to an REI.  Do you have a Gander Mountain or Cabelas near you?  I know our local Gander Mountain sells the Merrell Moabs.  You might also have a running store nearby.  They should carry trail shoes like Cascadias, Altas or Hokas.
