I am in agreement with Drew. Personally, I think Hokas are more durable than Altras, and they both hold up better than Brooks Cascadias. Waterproof shoes are wonderful for day hikes, but if you are doing a long walk they will eventually get wet then they will remain wet for a long time.

I think you can train your dog to carry a pack, but if you wait until you are on the trail it probably won't work out. It takes some training. Start working on it now. Put a empty pack on the dog around home and after a few days put some weight into it, then build it up. Dogs were not bred to be spoiled children, they were bred to work. They love to work. All these dog issues are probably your issues.

best wishes,

And they will take forever to dry out again in those waterproof shoes. On warm days, your feet will be hot and sweaty because those shoes are not very breathable. Light mesh shoes get wet but dry out quickly. Bring an extra pair of socks, rotate them frequently, and your feet will be much happier.

That's bunk. If your feet are hurting, hiking sucks. Don't take a chance on anything that doesn't feel right.

I know everyone's feet are unique and I will have to try them on. I was just trying to get a feel for things you can't test in the store; how do they handle slippery or rough terrain and are they actually as waterproof as they claim. My gear has improved a bunch in the last few months. When I can't hike I shop. The shoes are my last purchase but an important one. I don't remember who it was but someone recommended buying a few different ones. That is advice I will certainly take.
