Just an FYI on Big Sandy Lodge, I e-mailed Tim at BSL regarding whether they still accept packages for thru-hikers, and this is the response he e-mailed to me:

"Hi, Due to a break-in of my cabin for a hiker to get his package last season,we won't be doing this service any longer, it will be removed from the website. Tim"
This is very sad news. I wonder if CDT hikers offered to take up a
collection and pay for his damages if he would reconsider? I would be
willing to contribute some if I might not ever be able to use BSL myself
just to help other CDT hikers.
I tried calling Tim yesterday, but got his answering sevice. No return call yet.

No surprise about the answer - he's been hassled for the last five years or more

by hikers who seem to think they're something special and have forgotten the

meaning of the words courtesy and respect.

We used Big Sandy for both of our thrus. Now we won't have that option for the next

one. In '99 he was enthusiastic and cooperative. By 2006, he'd been burned too many

times by hikers who demanded maximum service for minimum (zero???) cost. And now

some a$$---e has given him good reason to cut off service.

Sorry, gang - but I'm on his side. He doesn't get paid enough to put up with the crap

that some (although not all ) hikers give him.

So - who's gonna be the one to screw up the deal at Benchmark?
Just talked to Tim at Big Sandy. He asked that Big Sandy be removed from all books,

websites, etc with respect to CDT resupply. It'll be removed from spiriteaglehome.com

tonight.

So... those who are hiking this year should make alternate resupply plans for that section

of the trail. Pinedale is a possible option, but be aware that there's a gas boom and motel

rooms are likely to be in really short supply, so don't count on actually staying there.
in conversation with a hiker it was mentioned that maybe I should send out
a reminder to hikers and their use of stock tanks for bathing purposes -
with warmer weather coming on I'm sure the tanks look very inviting for a
swim - this angers the ranchers to no end since the cows won't drink from
them after human use - we have a big problem "down south" with illegals using
the tanks to bathe and swim in - the rancher has to empty the tank, rinse
it out, and refill it - I'm sure it's the same "up north" - it's okay to dip
water from the tank and take bandana baths
