<font face="Arial">For those oldies that remember their PCT Hiker's
Handbook, all of Ray's northbound itineraries converged on June 15 at
Kennedy Meadows, hence "Ray Day." The idea was to give hikers (all of
whom were "assumed" to be following one of Ray's schedules) a chance to
meet and greet, then band together for safety's sake when entering the
snowy Sierras. But this was just an estimate based on an average
snowpack, and hikers were encouraged to start earlier or later
depending upon actual anticipated conditions, or show up in KM on Ray
Day and take a week off, if need be.<br>

The social/group aspect of Ray Day wouldn't really work on the CDT,
would it? The potential pool just isn't big enough or organized enough.
And the San Juans snowpack depth / snowmelt timeframe would seem to be
a lot more variable than the High Sierras. Then there's the matter of
starting at the NM border too late and being hassled by not enough
water or potential forest closures. <br>

Specific dates are just too neat for the messy Divide, imho.<br>

Also why are hikers not using the well documented Wolf alternative
that avoids the logging?
Perhaps heavy snow in the valley is the answer, but why negotiate the
blow downs (several times) if you don't have to?.
