Another possible solution is Amazon's Kindle e-reader, which offers a
"Basic Web" browser and runs on a Sprint 3G mobile network. Basic Web
is contract-free and included with the reader, albeit the service is
considered an "experimental" offering subject to change, so it'd be
risky to buy a Kindle solely or mostly for Basic Web. The browser is
also quite unusual in form and function, and works best with
mobile-formatted web pages. Yahoo mail still offers their barebones
mobile version through <a href="http://us.m1.yahoo.com">http://us.m1.yahoo.com</a>
and one could use the compose email body form as a rudimentary daily
journal, either saving or sending upon logging an entry. All composed
content would be web-based in this case, as I'm not aware of any way to
upload attachments via the Kindle itself. Since there's essentially no
offline mode for composing journal entries, the usefulness of this
approach would largely depend on frequency of mobile reception along
the trail, and how often the hiker needs to update.<br>

<div><strong>3.</strong> I find no info about availability and cost
of extra batteries.</div>
<div><strong>4.</strong> Can the "seeking a signal" function be
turned off to extend battery life? easily?</div>
<div><strong>5.</strong> On amazon.com and costco.com there is a wide
swath of negative feedback, from bad devices to flimsy devices to bad
email service to bad customer service. Please comment on those 4
general areas, as to what's been done to addresses these concerns. </div>
