I currently live in Butte and the new trail from Homestake Pass south to
Burton Park is very nice, especially the Highlands segment. Navigation
heading south towards Homestake Pass could be challenging if you want to
get off the Delmoe Lake Road and take some of the ATV trails as many are
not on the maps. I would not worry about ATV use near the pass,
especially if you are hiking through during the week. Weekends are likely
busier, but there are hundreds of miles of trails in the
Homestake/Pipestone area so they are very spread out. We occasionally run
on some of these trails north of the pass and I don't recall seeing any
motorized traffic except near the Homestake trailhead parking area and on
the Delmoe Lake Road. Wolf's guide will help you navigate the
area.<br><br>
Do not take the CDT marked trail that starts just north of the RR tracks
north of Homestake Pass. This nice new trail deadends 9 miles to the
north. You can follow a user trail from that point down to Butte via
Maude S Canyon, but probably not what you want to do. The forest service
is still working on a route from this point north to Our Lady of the
Rockies.<br><br>
I frequent the Quarry Brewery and enjoy their beers. They typically have
around 7 different beers on tap, from the Galena Gold to the Pitwater
Porter. Headframe Hef is a summertime favorite of many, but I prefer the
Gneiss IPA. The Quarry will be moving to a new location a couple blocks
north of their present location to Broadway. I expect they will move in
September, so all CDT hikers will likely be past Butte by then. <br><br>
I think you are asking about Homestake Lodge. Chris and Mandy are very
nice and helpful. They will show you a shortcut back to the CDT if you
are heading southbound or I expect they would drive you back to Homestake
Pass. They stock a variety of microbrews in their fridge available for a
nominal fee. The last CDTS Dividends mentions Stretch stayed at the
lodge last year.<br><br>

Of course if I get to Montana and don't have the time with winter
approaching, Anaconda will be the desired route and all the planning for
Butte would be discarded anyway.<br><br>
