Jim, the printed maps you may have carried on the GET a few years
ago came from digital sources, mostly lots of laborious tracing with
mouse in hand, eyeballs fixated on pixels ad nauseum. The toys you
refer to are, of course, optional, but everyone likes a good map.
Sometimes, not always, and maybe not for some folks in the case of
the CDT, we have to make our own maps in order to customize the
experience and get the most field-worthy printouts.<br>
<br>
The Arizona Trail Association takes an interesting approach with
their digital trail data: <br>
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.aztrail.org/passages/at_passages.html">http://www.aztrail.org/passages/at_passages.html</a><br>
<br>
The data is password-protected, and provides a great excuse to
become an ATA member in the process. The "map data" files are
waypoint-rich GPX tracks designed for custom map work by the end
user, and the "GPS data" is a truncated version of the waypoints for
uploading to a GPS unit.<br>

Been trying to tell people that for 10 years. It's easier,
cheaper, faster - but some people need their toys. :-)
