Hello Trew,
I am not a hiker...but I do know it is drying up in the Mimbres now. We are getting some rains (sprinkles) and the plants are still wilting. It's been a very dry year except for our rainy season in July/August. Folks were having a time finding water in the spring months and especially June. The water may return next year...who knows? It might be an idea to cache some water in places....if people want to let me know where to do this we could begin doing that. Emery Pass? Some place on the way from Demming? I know there is a fire look out and they are willing to share water if you ask. What is it like from the Mimbres Ranger Station to the Information station by the Gila Middle Fork?

If my plans for next year change some and I retire a few months earlier than
expected, I am now considering a sobo hike from Cumbres Pass. Are water
sources gone in the south by that time of year?

In hiking sobo what would be the latest one could get started in the north?
Fall colors in NM? A fall hike sounds attractive.

There is something about planning a hike that just takes hold of a person,
but you all know that.
I'm in Glacier right now (Brownies Hostel has melt in your mouth homemade
cinnamon rolls, laundry next door, shampoo in the showers and room #2 is
fantastic (might stay again if I shorten my trip hiking). Heading north
today... the BOB was great, switchback pass was amazingly beautiful, the
wall, and the x-c stretch over the divide near Elkcalf Peak..... then 2
GRIZZ, together! That could have been a disaster, for sure, but something
was looking out for little Speedy....
Planning on finishing up the 13th or 14th...all depends on the route I
choose and if my passport arrives. I personally am leaning towards a rather
cush 7 days of hiking finishing at Chief Mountain... oh dear, almost time to
get back to that other world....
