I have both the SPOT and Inreach. I
cancelled my SPOT contract when it expired and just use the
Inreach. The service on the Inreach costs more, but it works well
for my needs.

I use the delorme GPS (PN-60W) to compose the messages. I thought
about getting the Inreach that communicates with a mobile phone
but figured that I already had the GPS and by using the GPS I had
a backup option if my phone was dead/damaged/swimming etc. You
can use the inreach without a phone/GPS, but it limits the
messages that you can send when you only use the buttons on the
front. Before a hike, I usually pre-program a few messages and
recipients like "Everything is OK", "Please pick me up", etc.
Then those messages can be sent by just pushing a few buttons and
skipping the phone/GPS. It also has SOS & tracking features.
I occasionally use the tracking, as far as I can tell, it has
never missed a message. It supposedly can track for a week on a
set of lithium batteries. I haven't tested the battery life, but
it seems believable. Fortunately, I haven't had a need to use the
SOS feature.

The only problem that I have is the cost. The service is not
cheap, nor are the electronics. It would be nice if delorme would
bundle things: "Buy X years of service and get equipment for
free". Be sure to check out the subscription options and make
sure they work for you. I also carry the Inreach with me quite a
bit when I'm not on the trail, I just keep it with my other
gadgets. I figure if my car dies somewhere in the middle of
nowhere, I can use it to get help if the mobile phone is in a dead
spot or just plain dead. The GPS also comes with topo maps for
North America. I like using it to identify nearby land features.
