You could always hike out of Lone Pine on the all-new
Lowest-to-Highest Trail (L2H), spend the night at the Portal
backpacker's sites, start your acclimatization there, then
go on as planned in the morning. Total elevation gain of 10k
= envy of all dayhiking tourons.

Updated L2H home page: http://simblissity.net/L2H.shtml

The sign at the terminus for the Whitney Portal National
Recreation Trail (out of Lone Pine Campground) indicates
many of the old-timers felt that this trail was more
interesting and beautiful than the main Mt Whitney Trail.
