I am not sure I'm following your logic.
Al did not have ''Giardia'' when he started the hike.
The  ''Giardia''  simpletons first appeared about twenty days after he
stated drinking untreated water.
If, as you suggest, it was more likely the result of poor personal hygiene,
whom did he get it from???............He was hiking solo...........I say it
was the water.
