[pct-l] Trip Report - Pioneer Mail Picnic Area to ScissorsCrossing - Sec. A9-11

When I did Mt Laguna to Cuyamaca, there were still patches of snow along
the burn area. It kept the ash-dust down and made for interesting,
contrasting patterns- alternating white/black...like walking across a
mountainous jersey cow!
I was most impressed by the first real overlook while hiking along the
trail with views out over The Borrego from about 4k above it. And the
ruins of the old road reminded me of Frodo and Sam making their way into
Mordor.
While I approached the Oriflame, I nervously eyed the "dreaded San
Felipes"...

And the steady downhill from Mt Laguna challenged me to keep my 4 mph
average pace.

I enjoyed that segment!

Hi Dan,

Actually this hike can be spectacular after a good rain
and on a cool day later in the fall or early spring. When
the rain clears the air you can see the Salton Sea from
many places along this route. In spring it often has lots
of nice flowers in spaces between the new growth scrub. I
think that the fires of a few years ago made this section
much less interesting in fall. But I think it will still
produce lots green growth and flowers in the spring.

It sounds like you need to learn what time of year to
do segments. You should save San Jacinto for next May or
June, when everything is green and there is lots of water.
November is the time of year for doing the Mojave Desert
portions of the trail (Section E). You may also find it
boring too, but at least it won't be too hot.

            Rob
