The guidebook says that Muir Hut is to be camped in
only in case of emergency...

And I believe that when I spend the night in the Hut
this past August, it certainly qualified as such.
When I pulled in there at about 1700, the thunder was
just beginning. Not long thereafter the hail began,
with some hailstones as big as marbles. The weather
did not begin to let up until it was too dark to hike
safely. So I spent the night in there... as did 12
other people.

I left the Hut at 0600 the following morning, a cold,
clear, beautiful morning. Certainly the temperature
was below freezing, as the water on the trail had
turned to ice during the night. Cold enough so that
every footfall creaked in the silent and still dawn
air. The sun had not yet risen above the ridge to the
east... and I told myself I would keep walking until
the sun shone on me, and then I would stop and have
breakfast. At 0730 I finally stopped, and a more
beautiful and inspiring 90 minutes of hiking was never spent.
