I've affectionately dubbed grouse, "The Cardiac Arrest Birds". No 
explanation is necessary.

I don't carry a radio on the trail either. But listening to a hand picked 
playlist of deep ambient mp3's at night under a dense blanket of stars is a 
sure fire experience enhancer for me. You mileage will vary.
