That is one way.  Many bivy's have a small canopy that allow you to not
fully zip the bivy and still be covered. If the bivy is made from none
breathable material without a vent, install a vent and a small
canopy..........  IT COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE.
If you wrap up in a none breathable tarp make sure you put your pack,
boots,rock or any object that will keep one end open for ventilation.
